Santorum Ready to Fold if Mitt Gets Delegates (via Politico)

Rick Santorum said Sunday he’ll bow out of the Republican presidential race, if front-runner Mitt Romney locks down the required 1,144 delegates before the national convention in August.

“If Gov. Romney gets that required number, then without a doubt, if he’s at that number, we’ll step aside,” the former Pennsylvania senator told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “Right now, he’s not there. He’s not even close to it.”

Romney is about halfway to the target, going into the Wisconsin, Maryland and District of Columbia primaries on Tuesday.

Santorum has cast himself as the underdog in the GOP primary, saying his lack of campaign funding is being offset by his ability to connect with rust belt Republicans.

“I think David would like to have these odds versus Goliath,” Santorum said. “This is a Herculean task.”

But heading into Tuesday’s primaries, Romney is racking up endorsements that would help build on his lead, including one Sunday on “Meet the Press” from freshman Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).

And a recent poll out of Franklin & Marshall College shows Romney pulling even with Santorum in his home state of Pennsylvania ahead of its April 24 primary.

“We have to win Pennsylvania, and we’re going to win Pennsylvania,” Santorum said. “I have no doubt about that.”

  1. I guess the conservatives would have to hold their nose and vote for the Mitt? Strange times. Liberals know who the Mitt really is and aren’t very concerned about his policies. He is one of them.
